General La Marmora wanted a camouflage headdress, and the capercaillie feathers were ideal for when the Bersaglieri,

mostly employed in surprise actions, they suddenly came out of the bush.

Initially the capercaillie feathers were used only by the troops while the officers were equipped with green ostrich feathers.

Subsequently, the latter also adopted the headdress of the troop.
