In 1836 Giuseppe Silvestro Vayra (Cherasco, 31 December 1813 - Cherasco, 26 October 1882) was the first Italian bersagliere

and the first soldier to wear the uniform designed by La Marmora.

It is in his honor that the feathered hat of the Bersaglieri is jargon called Vaira.
